Q1: What are mechanically-gated ion channels and how do they respond to stimuli?
Mechanically-gated ion channels are transmembrane proteins that open in response to mechanical stress such as pressure, touch, sound, and temperature. When activated, these channels allow ions to move down their electrochemical gradient, depolarizing the membrane and triggering an action potential that propagates to the central nervous system for appropriate physiological responses.
Q2: How do PIEZO channels function in the body?
PIEZO channels are mechanosensitive ion channels that open in response to mechanical stress like touch and pressure. Beyond external sensory perception, these channels serve as internal sensors for blood pressure regulation and breathing.
