The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle that acts as the control center of a eukaryotic cell. It contains chromosomal DNA, which controls gene expression and precisely regulates protein production within the cell. In contrast, DNA in mitochondria and chloroplasts carries out functions specific to those organelles only.
Q2: How does chromatin organization change during the cell cycle?
During interphase when cells are not dividing, chromatin is organized diffusely, allowing easy access to DNA for transcription and replication. When the cell is about to divide, chromatin condenses tightly into distinct, linear chromosomes that can be easily segregated into daughter cells during division.
