Q1: What is the mode in statistics?
The mode is a measure of central tendency defined as the most frequently occurring value in a dataset. For example, if a sprinter clocks 16.5 seconds most often during training, 16.5 seconds is the mode. The mode is particularly useful for analyzing categorical data and is the only measure of central tendency applicable to nominal scale data, such as nationality categories or survey responses.
Q2: Can a dataset have more than one mode?
Yes, datasets can have multiple modes. When two values occur with equal highest frequency, the data is bimodal. For instance, if exam scores of 430 and 480 each appear twice while other scores appear once, both are modes. Datasets with more than two modes are multimodal. However, if no value repeats, the dataset has no mode, as seen with prime numbers between one and ten.
