Q1: What nerves make up the lumbar plexus and what areas do they innervate?
The lumbar plexus is composed of the first four lumbar spinal nerves (L1-L4) that branch into the iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, genitofemoral, lateral femoral cutaneous, femoral, and obturator nerves. These nerves provide sensory and motor innervation to the muscles and skin of the abdomen, pelvis, and parts of the lower limbs, enabling functions like walking and posture maintenance.
Q2: Why is the sciatic nerve considered significant in the sacral plexus?
The sciatic nerve is the thickest and longest nerve in the body, originating from the sacral plexus and extending down to the lower leg and foot. It is a common source of pain and discomfort when irritated or compressed, a condition called sciatica. The sciatic nerve provides crucial sensory and motor innervation to the pelvis and legs.
