Q1: What are sympathetic chain ganglia and where are they located?
Sympathetic chain ganglia, also called sympathetic trunk ganglia or paravertebral ganglia, are paired relay stations located bilaterally along the spinal cord. They serve as synapse sites between preganglionic and postganglionic neurons. These ganglia are organized into five regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal, with each region containing multiple ganglia that innervate different body structures.
Q2: How do postganglionic neurons exit the sympathetic chain ganglia?
Postganglionic neurons follow four distinct pathways from the sympathetic chain ganglia. They merge with spinal nerves through gray rami communicans to innervate skin; wrap around arteries as cephalic periarterial nerves to supply the face and head; form sympathetic nerves reaching thoracic organs like the heart and lungs; or travel as splanchnic nerves to sympathetic pathways collateral ganglia and other visceral targets.
Q3: Which organs do the cervical and thoracic ganglia innervate?
The superior cervical ganglion innervates the head and heart, while middle and inferior cervical ganglia supply the heart, blood vessels, neck, shoulder, and upper limbs.
