Q1: What are the main divisions of the respiratory system?
The respiratory system divides into upper and lower regions. Upper respiratory organs include the nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and pharynx. Lower respiratory organs consist of the larynx, trachea, bronchial tree, alveoli, lungs, and pleurae. Each component plays a specific role in conducting air and facilitating gas exchange.
Q2: How do the paranasal sinuses and pharynx contribute to respiration?
Paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities surrounding the nose that help moisten inhaled air. The pharynx, or throat, connects the nasal cavity to the larynx and exposes the immune system to inhaled antigens. Together, these structures prepare air for passage into the lower respiratory tract.
Q3: What is the role of the epiglottis in the respiratory system?
The epiglottis is a flap located in the larynx that directs food to the esophagus and air to the larynx. This structure enables humans to eat and breathe simultaneously without choking, making it a critical safety feature of the respiratory system.
Q4: Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs?
Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli, tiny air sacs at the end of bronchioles within the lungs. Oxygen from inhaled air diffuses across thin alveolar walls into the bloodstream, while waste carbon dioxide from body cells is transported back to the alveoli for exhalation through physical principles governing gas exchange.
Q5: What function do the pleurae serve in the respiratory system?
The pleurae are serous membranes that compartmentalize the lungs and produce lubricating fluid for the lungs and thoracic cavity. This fluid reduces friction during breathing, allowing the lungs to expand and contract smoothly within the chest cavity during inhalation and exhalation.
Q6: How does the bronchial tree distribute air throughout the lungs?
The trachea branches into right and left main bronchi, forming the bronchial tree. These airways further divide into secondary bronchi and smaller bronchioles that conduct air deeper into the lungs. This branching structure ensures air reaches all regions of lung tissue for efficient gas exchange.
Q7: Why do humans have a large number of alveoli in their lungs?
Humans have highly developed lungs with numerous alveoli that provide a vast surface area for gas exchange. This extensive alveolar network allows us to maintain a high metabolic rate and supports our capacity for endurance and sustained physical activity throughout the day.
