Q1: What is the azygos system and which veins does it comprise?
The azygos system is a network of veins that drains most of the thorax. It comprises three main veins: the azygos vein on the right side of the midline, the hemiazygos vein on the left side, and the accessory hemiazygos vein, also on the left. All three veins ultimately drain into the superior vena cava, returning deoxygenated blood to the heart and maintaining circulatory efficiency.

The azygos vein originates at the junction of the right ascending lumbar and subcostal veins, positioned just right of the midline anterior to the vertebral column.
