Q1: What are the main structural layers of the vagina?
The vagina consists of three distinct layers. The innermost layer is the vaginal mucosa, composed of nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium with transverse folds called rugae. The middle muscular layer, or muscularis, contains inner circular and outer longitudinal muscle fibers enabling elasticity. The outermost adventitia layer is areolar connective tissue that anchors the vagina to neighboring organs.
Q2: How does the vaginal environment maintain its acidic pH?
The vaginal mucosa stores significant glycogen reserves that serve as an energy source for beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria. These bacteria metabolize glycogen into lactic acid, maintaining an acidic pH below 4.5. This acidic environment inhibits the growth of harmful microorganisms and supports the vagina's natural self-cleaning process through a balanced microbial community.
