Cognitive learning includes purposive behavior, incidental learning, and insight learning.
Tolman proposed that behavior is goal-directed and must be studied in sequences to understand its purpose. For example, athletes follow a strict training regimen to improve performance and achieve their fitness goals.
He also suggested that behavior is influenced by expectations and conditioned stimuli, such as employees working hard for promotions based on past rewards.
Additionally, studies on incidental or latent learning support the role of cognition in learning.
Incidental learning occurs without reinforcement, is stored cognitively, and is not immediately reflected in behavior. For example, individuals exploring a new city without a specific goal can later navigate it effectively when they need to reach a particular destination.
Similarly, Wolfgang Kohler believed that learning involves cognitive factors like problem-solving and sudden insight rather than trial and error.
For example, in his experiments with chimpanzees, he observed that they suddenly realized they could stack boxes to reach a banana, displaying insight learning.
