Q1: What does xanthelasma indicate during a cardiovascular examination?
Xanthelasma is a yellowish deposit on the eyelids that indicates elevated cholesterol levels and hyperlipidemia. These raised deposits appear on the nasal portion of the eyelids and are an important sign of metabolic abnormality during cardiovascular inspection. Identifying xanthelasma helps assess a patient's lipid profile and cardiovascular risk.
Q2: How do you assess capillary refill during cardiovascular palpation?
Capillary refill is assessed by briefly squeezing the nail bed and observing the color return. Normal refill takes less than 2 seconds; prolonged refill suggests compromised arterial perfusion. This quick test indicates whether tissues are receiving adequate blood flow and oxygen delivery.
Q3: What does a displaced point of maximal impulse indicate?
