Q1: What is echocardiography and what heart conditions does it diagnose?
Echocardiography is an ultrasound imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture detailed images of the heart called echocardiograms. It diagnoses heart failure, valve disorders, and myocardial infarction while assessing cardiac structures' size, shape, and motion. The procedure also evaluates ventricular wall motion and detects pericardial effusions and abnormal blood flow patterns.
Q2: How does the transducer work during an echocardiogram?
The transducer, or ultrasound probe, is placed over conductive gel at the second and fourth intercostal spaces to the left of the sternum. It emits high-frequency ultrasound waves that penetrate the chest and bounce off heart structures. A computer then converts these returning sound waves into visual images displayed on a monitor, allowing visualization of cardiac anatomy and function.
Q3: What patient positioning is used during echocardiography?
The patient initially lies supine (on their back) on the examination table. During the procedure, the patient may be asked to turn and lie on their left side, called left decubitus position. This positional change allows the cardiac sonographer to adjust the transducer's angle and capture different heart views, such as parasternal and apical views, providing comprehensive cardiac assessment.

M-mode, or Motion mode, provides a one-dimensional vertical view useful for measuring cardiac structures and assessing motion.
