The optimal arousal theory is based on the Yerkes-Dodson law, formulated by Robert Yerkes and John Dodson. This law illustrates the relationship between arousal and performance, depicting an inverted U-shaped curve.
The curve shows that peak performance is achieved with moderate arousal. For example, a student who is motivated but not overly stressed is more likely to focus and perform well on an exam.
When arousal is too low, such as when a student feels overly relaxed, performance declines due to boredom or apathy, leading to mistakes or slow thinking.
Conversely, when arousal is too high, a student may experience test anxiety, causing them to forget information or make errors.
Optimal arousal levels differ by individual and task difficulty. For example, an athlete excels with high arousal during a sprint, while a chess player requires a calm state to focus on their next move.
Similarly, sensation seekers crave high stimulation and prefer more complex sensory experiences. For instance, students studying abroad often score higher on sensation-seeking scales than those in their home country.
