Around 400 BCE., the Greek philosopher Democritus asked this question. He believed that if you kept dividing anything, you'd eventually reach a piece so small it couldn’t be divided anymore.
He named these pieces atomos, meaning uncuttable in Greek, which later inspired the word atom.
Democritus imagined atoms as solid, indestructible building blocks of the universe, separated by a void. He thought they were constantly in motion, colliding and combining to form everything we see, from rivers and mountains to humans.
He also believed that atoms' shapes and sizes gave things their unique properties. For example, slippery atoms made liquids flow, while solid atoms stuck together to form rigid structures.
He also suggested that differences in weight came from how closely atoms were packed, with lighter substances having more space between their atoms.
Democritus couldn’t prove his ideas, but John Dalton built on them centuries later and proposed Dalton’s atomic theory.
