Branches of Earth Science

Earth science is the study of the planet Earth, including its land, water, air, and living things. There are five main branches of Earth science.

Geology is the study of how rocks and minerals form. They also study how fossils form, study the rivers and lakes, and explain how volcanos erupt.

Oceanography studies the oceans, waves, and marine life. Oceanographers study the ocean floor to understand underwater mountains and discover new marine species in the deep sea.

Meteorology is another interesting branch of Earth science that focuses on weather and the atmosphere. For example, meteorologists use radar to follow tornadoes and predict their paths to keep people safe. Climatologists study the shifts in Earth’s climate, such as rising temperatures, and understand how they affect life on Earth.

Environmental science is the study of how living things, like people, animals, and plants, interact with the world around them. It studies how human activities, such as cutting down trees or causing water pollution, affect animals in a forest or fish in a pond.

Astronomy is another fascinating branch that helps us understand Earth's place in the universe. It studies the Sun and planets and explores faraway galaxies.
