Above the photosphere is the chromosphere, a thin layer that glows red due to the heat from below. It’s about 2,000 km thick, has temperatures ranging from 4000 degrees Celsius to about 10,000 degrees Celsius, and shoots jets of gas into space at high speeds.

The corona extends millions of kilometers into space and is only visible during a total solar eclipse when the Moon blocks the Sun’s center, leaving only a glowing ring.
