The most visible feature on the Sun’s surface is sunspots. These are cooler, darker areas caused by intense magnetic activity.
Sunspots often appear in pairs. They follow an 11-year cycle, beginning with a minimum number of spots, gradually rising to a maximum, and then decreasing to a minimum.
Sometimes, these magnetic activities create solar flares, which are massive energy explosions.
Solar flares release streams of particles known as the solar wind, which can disrupt power grids, interfere with radio, satellite, and cell phone communications, and pose serious risks to astronauts in space.
Another spectacular feature is solar prominences. These glowing plasma arches can stretch thousands of kilometers into the Sun’s atmosphere and can be seen during a total solar eclipse.
