Latitude measures how far north or south a place is from the equator, using a scale from 0° to 90°. As you move away from the equator, the climate shifts with latitude.
Near the equator, sunlight hits directly, so temperatures are generally hotter.
As you move to higher latitudes, sunlight hits at an angle and is less intense, which lowers temperatures.
At the poles, sunlight is the weakest. Snow and ice reflect much of the Sun’s energy, keeping the region even colder.
To understand this, look at four cities along roughly the same longitude.
In July, Austin heats up with highs near 96°F and lows around 74°F. Head north to Wichita, and it cools a bit; highs hit 93°, lows about 70°. Fargo is colder than Wichita, averaging 82° by day and 60° at night. Far up in Thompson, daytime highs reach only 73°, with chilly nights dropping to around 48°.
This temperature trend clearly shows how latitude, not longitude, plays a key role in shaping a region's climate.
