Peer review is how the research world ensures quality. Before publication, experts in the same field rigorously evaluate research manuscripts to ensure they are accurate, original, and trustworthy.
It starts when an author submits their research manuscript to an academic journal, where the editor checks if it meets the journal’s guidelines and scope.
If it does, it’s sent to qualified peer reviewers who critically examine the study’s design, data analysis, and contribution to the field. There are various review models, and each journal chooses its preferred one.
Single-blind: reviewers know who the author is, but not the other way around.
Double-blind: neither side knows the other’s identity.
Open review: both are visible.
Reviewers provide structured reports, pointing out strengths and flaws and making a recommendation: accept, revise, or reject.
If revisions are needed, the author updates and resubmits the manuscript, often returning to the same reviewers. If two reviewers disagree, the journal editor may consult an additional reviewer. This review and revision cycle can take weeks or even months.
Once accepted, the article is copyedited, formatted, and finally published in the academic journal.
