Contact and Non-contact Forces

A force is a push or pull that can make something move, stop, or change direction.

Interestingly, not all forces require direct contact. So, based on whether there is contact, forces can be categorized into contact and non-contact.

Contact forces occur when two objects touch.

Imagine riding a bike and hitting the brakes. The brake pads touch the wheels and slow them down—that’s friction, a contact force.

Applied forces, like pushing a shopping cart or kicking a soccer ball, and spring forces, like jumping on a trampoline, are also contact forces.

Now let’s talk about non-contact forces. These act over a distance—no physical touch is needed.

When you drop a ball, it falls due to gravity, a force that pulls it towards the Earth's center without direct contact.

A magnet pulling a paperclip without touching it is also a non-contact force.

And when you rub a balloon on your hair, it starts to attract small pieces of paper. That’s an electric force working from a distance.
