Sykdomsfremkallende mutasjoner i aktin kan endre cytoskeletal funksjon. Cytoskeletal dynamikk kvantifiseres gjennom avbildning av fluorescently merkede proteiner ved hjelp av total intern fluorescens mikroskopi. Som et eksempel har cytoskeletal protein, Aip1p, endret lokalisering og bevegelse i cellene som uttrykker mutant aktin isoform, R256H.
