Ma. Cecilia Sanchez, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Biochemistry Department, FCQ, UNC and Director of the Laboratory of Neovascularization and Retinal Degeneration at CIBICI-CONICET Institute. Currently, she is President of the Argentine Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (AIVO), chapter of Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Using the eye as a model, her research focuses on the study of the interactions between blood vessels and the non-vascular components of the retina such as glial cells and neurons and how they change in neovascular and degenerative diseases like retinopathy of prematurit, diabetic retinopathy and Sickle cell disease. Specifically, she study antiangiogenic and neuroprotective factors with the goal of developing therapies to stop these complications in patients with non proliferative and proliferative retinopathies.
