Artificial selection, also called selective breeding, is the human choice of which plants or animals reproduce. It uses natural variation in a population to produce traits people want. Over many generations, this can create domesticated organisms that look very different from their wild ancestors.

Natural selection is a different process, but it helps explain how change happens in nature. In adaptive evolution, differences in traits can lead to differences in survival and reproductive success. The Medium Ground Finch on Daphne Major Island is a classic example. During a drought in the late 1970s, only birds with larger beaks could crack the large, thick-shelled seeds that remained. Small-beaked birds died more often, while the survivors had larger, stronger bills.

Those beak differences were genetic, so they were passed to offspring. The next year, the population had, on average, larger bills and body sizes than before the drought. About 8 years later, high rainfall brought back plants that made small seeds. Small-beaked finches then became more common again. Over the past 5 decades, this finch population has shifted along with the food available. This shows that natural selection acts on genetic variation already present in a population.

Humans have used the same kind of variation in artificial selection to shape crops and animals. Farmers and breeders have selected traits such as larger fruits and vegetables or cows that produce more milk. When selection continues for many generations, the result can be an organism that barely resembles its starting form. Dogs such as Chihuahuas and Great Danes were derived from gray wolves in only a few thousand years. Scientists study dog genetics to find the elements linked to differences in appearance and behavior. That work may also help explain human genetic diversity.

Plant breeding shows the same pattern clearly. Brassica oleracea, a leafy plant native to coastal southern and western Europe, has been bred in many places over hundreds of years into about 400 vegetables. These include turnips, cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Another related species, B. rapus, has a subspecies with a very short life cycle of about one month. It is called Wisconsin Fast Plants and is used as a model organism in research and education. It germinates in a few days, makes flowers after two weeks, and produces viable seeds by four weeks before it usually dies.
