Plant adaptations for land life explain how plants moved from water to land and diversified over time. Kingdom Plantae first appeared about 410 million years ago, when green algae began transitioning from aquatic environments to dry land. That shift was difficult, but land offered more light, more carbon dioxide, and far less competition than crowded oceans.

Life on land forced plants to solve new problems. Aquatic plants can absorb water and nutrients directly from the surrounding liquid, use buoyancy for support, and move gametes through water for fertilization. On land, those strategies no longer worked, so early plants evolved new structures and reproductive methods that shaped the plant forms we see today.

One early change was the cuticle, a waxy outer layer that helps prevent desiccation, or extreme drying. But the cuticle also blocked direct gas exchange. Plants responded by developing stomata, which are surface pores that let carbon dioxide in and oxygen out, and by using guard cells to close those pores during dry conditions and limit water loss.

Plants also needed a way to move water and nutrients upward. Vascular tissue evolved for this job. It transports water and nutrients through the plant and also gives stems support so plants can grow taller and stronger.

Reproduction on land required more protection for gametes and embryos. Terrestrial plants developed gametangia, which are reproductive structures that protect gametes and embryos from the outside environment. Male gametangia are called antheridia, and female gametangia are called archegonia. Sperm may swim, be carried by wind, or be moved by pollinators such as bees and birds, depending on the plant group.

Seeds became another major advantage for many land plants. Seeded plants use small male spores called pollen grains, which carry sperm directly to the egg. After fertilization, the seed forms with a plant embryo, nutrients, and often a protective coat. Many seeds can survive dry conditions, spread long distances, or remain dormant until the right conditions trigger germination.

Modern plants are grouped into three main lineages: non-vascular, vascular seedless, and vascular seeded plants. Non-vascular plants, such as mosses, liverworts, and hornworts, are the most ancestral and least complex. They lack vascular tissue and seeds, have a thin cuticle or none at all, stay low to the ground, and depend on water for survival and reproduction. Their bare sperm must swim through water to reach the archegonia, and some can enter dormancy during dry periods until rain returns.

Vascular seedless plants, such as ferns and horsetails, are found in wet habitats, including the understory of temperate rain forests. They have a thicker cuticle, functioning stomata, and vascular tissue, so they can grow taller and move water and nutrients more efficiently. However, they still do not make seeds, and they need moist conditions to move gametes through water during reproduction.

Vascular seeded plants include the most diverse and widespread plant species. They share vascular tissue, mobile pollen, and seeds, and they are divided into angiosperms and gymnosperms. Angiosperms are flowering and fruiting plants, and their flowers and fruits help move pollen and seeds. Bees and hummingbirds often carry pollen between flowers, and fruits such as apples, oranges, tomatoes, avocados, and cucumbers help spread seeds when animals eat or transport them.

Gymnosperms are non-flowering plants such as conifers, cycads, and ginkgo trees. They produce bare seeds that are not protected by fruit, and their pollen is carried by wind. Together, angiosperms and gymnosperms make up most of the plants seen today. Human activity has also changed plant diversity through artificial selection, as seen in the Brassica group, where wild mustard was bred into kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnips, kohlrabi, and cauliflower. Humans have also introduced invasive species, such as kudzu, which was brought from Southeast Asia to the eastern United States but now outcompetes native plants and causes major damage each year.
