القوي البين جزيئية،التي توجد بين الجزيئات،مصدرها التفاعلات الكهروستاتيكية،بين الشحنات،الشحنات الجزئية،والشحنات المؤقتة. جميع الجزيئات تنتج شحنات مؤقتة. نتيجة التفاوت في توزيع الإلكترونات،ارتفاع كثافة الاكترون في أحد مناطق سحابة الإلكترونات،تتنتج ثنائي قطب لحظي،أو ثنائي قطب مؤقت.وهذا يحفّز فيما بعد ثنائي قطب آخر لحظي في الجزيء المجاور. تأثير الدومينو لثنائيات القطب،ينجم عنه قوى تجاذب ضعيفة بين الجزيئات،تسمى قوى التشتت،وهي موجودة بين كافة الجزيئات،سواء كانت قطبية أم غير قطبية. بعض المركبات التساهمية،كالماء على سبيل المثال،تُظهر مناطق كثيرة الإلكترونات وأخرى قليلة الإلكترونات نتيجة فروقات السالبيةالكهربية للذرات.التوزيع الغير متساوي للإلكترونات المشتركة،والشكل الجزيئي للمركب يُنتج شحنات جزئية دائمة،والتي بدورها تُنتج ثنائي قطب دائم في المركب المحايد فتجعله قطبيًا. الجزيئات ذات الثنائية القطبية الدائمة و تسمى أيضًا مركبات قطبية ترتب نفسها ما بين قوى ثنائي القطب-ثنائي القطب،حيث الطرف الموجب للجزيء يتفاعل إلكتروستاتيكياًمع الطرف السالب للجزيء المجاور. إذا احتوى مركب قطبي على ذرة هيدروجين مترابطة تساهميًا مع ذرة صغيرة ذات سالبية كهربية عالية،كذرة الفلور أو الأكسجين،أو النيتروجين،تميل الذرات إلى إظهار شحنات جزئية أكبر.بالتالي،فإن ذرة الهيدروجين،في F-H،أو O-H،أو N-H تتفاعل بقوة مع الذرة الكهروسالبية للذرة المجاورة،عبر نوع خاص من قوى ثنائي القطب-ثنائي القطب،وتعرف بالرابطة الهيدروجينية. ومن الملاحظ،أن الروابط الهيدروجينية أقوى من قوى ثنائي القطب-ثنائي القطب،وأن المركبات القادرة على تشكيل روابط هيدروجينية،تكون فيها نقاط الذوبان ونقاط الغليان أعلى. القوى الثلاث البين جزيئية التشتت،والقوى ثنائي القطب-ثنائي القطب،والروابط الهيدروجينية تعتبر بالمقارنة مع القوى البين جزئية تعتبر قوى ضعيفة نسبيًا،و تتفاوت في مدى شدتها.وتصنّف جميعًا كقوى فان دير فالس. بينما تتواجد قوى التشتت بين كافة الجزيئات،الروابط بين جزيئين قطبيين سواء كانت قطبية أم غير قطبية،والروابط الهيدروجينية توجد في الجزيئات القطبية فقط. أما قوة الترابط،بين أيون وبين جزيء قطبي،فتنحصر في المحاليل،وهي االقوة البين جزئية الأشد.عندما يُحل مركب أيوني مثل كلوريد الصوديوم،في مذيب قطبي كالماء،فإن الأيونات المتفككة تتفاعل مع ثنائيات القطب الموجودة في المذيب بواسطة قوى ترابط أيون وجزيء قطبي. وهنا تتصل الأيونات الموجبة مع الأطراف السالبة لجزيئات الماء،بينما تتفاعل الأيونات السالبة مع الأطراف الموجبة.

Intermolecular Forces
