amines: shape, bonding, and chirality

Amines have a nitrogen atom with a lone pair of electrons. That lone pair affects the shape of the molecule, the bond angles, and the bond lengths around nitrogen.

In most amines, nitrogen is hybridized and attached to three substituents. The bond angle is about 108°, which is a little less than the 109.5° tetrahedral angle. The C–N–H bond angle is slightly larger at 112°, and the carbon-nitrogen bond length is 147 pm. This bond is longer than the carbon-oxygen bond in alcohols, which is 143 pm, but shorter than the carbon-carbon bond in alkanes, which is 154 pm.

Aliphatic amines have a trigonal pyramidal geometry. In this shape, nitrogen sits at the apex of the pyramid, and the three substituents form the base. The nonbonded electron pair lies above the nitrogen atom.

When nitrogen in an amine has a lone pair and three different substituents, it can become a stereogenic center. That means the molecule can exist as two nonsuperposable mirror images, called enantiomers. When assigning configuration, the unshared electron pair on nitrogen is given the lowest priority.

These enantiomers usually interconvert very quickly by pyramidal inversion. In this process, the molecule passes through an sp2-hybridized transition state. Because this happens so easily, it is difficult to separate these chiral amines, and most simple chiral amines are optically inactive. The energy barrier for interconversion is about 25 kJ mol−1.

Quaternary ammonium salts behave differently. They have four different substituents and no electron pair, so they do not undergo pyramidal inversion. As a result, they can be resolved more easily. Amines with chiral carbons, and amines that cannot reach an sp2-hybridized transition state, can also be separated into enantiomer pairs.
