Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons from one species to another. In this type of reaction, electrons are not shared between atoms. They move from the species that loses them to the species that gains them.

The species that loses electrons is the reducing agent, also called the reductant. It is oxidized during the reaction. The species that gains electrons is the oxidizing agent, or oxidant, and it is reduced.

Redox reactions are often written as two half-reactions. One half-reaction shows the species that gains electrons, and the other shows the species that loses electrons. This format helps separate the oxidation step from the reduction step.

The thermodynamics of many reactions is described using Gibbs free energy, or ΔG. That value depends on the concentrations of reactants and products. For redox reactions, thermodynamics is described with electrochemical potential, E, and the Nernst equation because electrons are moving in the reaction. The Nernst equation shows how electrochemical potential relates to reactant and product concentrations.
