Chemical Equilibria: Systematic Approach to Equilibrium Calculations

In systems with multiple equilibria, the equilibrium calculations use a systematic approach involving a series of steps to make sure there are as many equations as chemical species.
Firstly, identify all the chemical reactions in the system.
Then, formulate the equilibrium constant expression for each reaction.
Next, create mass-balance equations that reveal two sources of hydroxide ions. The hydroxide ion concentration from the dissociation of magnesium hydroxide is twice the magnesium ion concentration, and the hydroxide ion concentration from the dissociation of water is equal to the hydronium ion concentration.
Then, make an expression for the charge balance of ionic species that follows the principle of electroneutrality, meaning the positive and negative charge concentrations in the solution must be equal.
Finally, determine the number of independent equations. If the number is equal to or exceeds the number of chemical species involved or unknowns, the equations are solvable.
Assumptions about the relative concentrations of species are often made to simplify the calculations.
The validity of the assumptions must be checked in the final answer.

For example, to calculate the solubility of a sparingly soluble salt in an aqueous solution in the presence of a common ion, one must consider all the equilibria in this solution. Calculations for these systems can be complicated and tedious, so a systematic approach with a series of steps is often helpful. The process is detailed below.
The first step is to identify all the chemical reactions involved, The next is to formulate their corresponding equilibrium constant expressions. The third step is to write the equilibrium mass balance equations, which are based on the law of conservation of mass. These equations relate the total amount of a species in the solution in different forms (equilibrium concentration of the species) to the total amount of that species initially added to the solution (analytical concentration of the species). There may be more than one mass-balance equation for a given set of equilibria. Furthermore, for equilibria with charged species, a charge balance equation is required based on the principle of electroneutrality, which states that the total charge concentration of the positively charged species in the solution must equal that of the negatively charged species. For a given set of equilibria, only one charge-balance equation can be written. After mass-balance and charge-balance equations are written, the number of independent equations obtained is counted. If it equals or exceeds the number of unknowns involved in the equilibria, the equations can be solved for the unknowns. After solving for the unknowns, the validity of the approximations needs to be checked because approximations of the relative concentrations of species are often introduced in the mass-balance equations or charge-balance equations to simplify the calculations. &#160;&#160;

Chemical equilibrium calculations become easier when they are organized around mass balance and charge balance. This approach is useful for systems with multiple equilibria, where several reactions must be considered together. It is especially helpful when finding the solubility of a sparingly soluble salt in water with a common ion present.

The first step is to identify every chemical reaction in the system. Next, write the equilibrium constant expression for each reaction. These expressions connect the concentrations of the reacting species at equilibrium.

After that, write the mass-balance equations. A mass-balance equation uses the law of conservation of mass. It relates the total amount of a species in solution at equilibrium to the total amount originally added, which is called the analytical concentration. A single system may require more than one mass-balance equation.

If the equilibria include charged species, a charge-balance equation is also needed. This equation follows the rule of electroneutrality, which means the total positive charge in solution must equal the total negative charge. For a given set of equilibria, only one charge-balance equation can be written.

Once the equations are set up, the next step is to count the independent equations and the unknowns. If the number of independent equations equals or is greater than the number of unknowns, the system can be solved. Any approximations made along the way should be checked afterward, since mass-balance and charge-balance equations often use simplified relative concentrations.

Understand and be prepared to use values specific to chemical processes: the mole, molar mass, molarity, and percent composition. EXPLANATION: During the early and mid-1800s, a tremendous amount of early research poured into building an understanding of the way that atoms combine. This work required analysis of the percent composition of different substances. Joseph Proust's work with tin oxides led him to publish his law of definite proportions noting that a given pure substance will have a constant ratio for the combination of elements making up the substance. Building on Proust's work, John Dalton published his law of multiple proportions and atomic theory noting that multiple patterns exist for the way that atoms combine, yet the combining atoms are invariable. Meanwhile Amedeo Avogadro hypothesizes that given equal pressures and temperatures, two equal volumes of gas will contain equal numbers of atoms. Acknowledging that the exact number of atoms was unknown in these gaseous volumes, the Latin word "mole" was used. "Mole" translates to "lump" recognizing the ambiguous quantity of gas. A number of attempts have been undertaken historically to quantify the mole. Robert Millikan's oil drop experiment revealed the change of a single electron, which could then be divided into Faraday's Constant for the charge of a mole of electrons. Dividing the charge of a mole of electrons by the charge of a single electron yields the number of electrons in a mole, $6.022\times10^{\wedge}23$. Students should be familiar with how to translate between the given quantities. Student's first use atomism/Dalton's atomic theory in third grade noting that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. This the first time where students will undertake the process of counting these invisible particles. Electrolysis of water provides a tangible experience to demonstrate the constituent parts of water, though the definite proportions of water may not be easily seen due to the solubility of the gasses produced. The concept of relative mass can be explored by comparing small groups of like items. For example, relative masses of beans can be compared with pinto, white, and black beans. If bags are created with equal numbers of like beans, students can develop a concept of why the smallest bean will have a relative mass of 1, analogous to hydrogen.
