The chromatographic column efficiency describes how much a solute band broadens during separation. It was originally defined by the plate theory of chromatography, named for the plates in a fractional distillation column.
The theory visualizes a column as consisting of discrete yet continuous narrow layers called theoretical plates, with the solute repeatedly equilibrating between the mobile and stationary phases as it travels down the column. 
Although it is now known that no such equilibration steps occur, the primary term measuring column efficiency is still called the plate number or number of theoretical plates, symbolized N.
As chromatographic peaks are nearly Gaussian in shape, N expresses peak broadening in terms of variance&#8212;the square of the standard deviation&#8212;and it relates to retention time and peak width at the base or half of the height.
Another term originating from plate theory that describes column efficiency is the height equivalent to a theoretical plate, or HETP, which is the column length divided by N.

Minimizing H is crucial for achieving better efficiency and reducing column length.
Plate heights vary for different solutes due to differing diffusion coefficients. They range from 0.1 to 1 mm in gas chromatography, around 10 &#181;m in high-performance liquid chromatography, and less than 1 &#181;m in capillary electrophoresis.
Column efficiency can be defined as the variance per unit length, as chromatographic bands often have Gaussian shapes. The number of theoretical plates also relates to retention time and peak width at the base or half height. It is important to note that theoretical plates are an abstract concept, and their number depends on the column and solute properties, making them variable for different solutes.
In packed columns, the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) is a valuable parameter representing column performance. HETP indicates the column length needed for one theoretical plate and is essential for designing and evaluating packed column efficiency. A lower HETP value signifies a higher column efficiency and improved separation capabilities.

Theoretical plates help explain how chromatography columns achieve good separation. Column efficiency is measured by band broadening, and that efficiency depends on the number of theoretical plates, or N. In plate theory, a column is treated as a continuous series of imaginary plates where solute equilibration happens between the stationary and mobile phases.

A higher number of theoretical plates means better column efficiency and stronger separation ability. Plate height affects both band width and separation quality. It is inversely proportional to column efficiency, so a smaller plate height gives a more efficient column. The number of theoretical plates is calculated as column length, L, divided by plate height, H.

Reducing H is important for improving efficiency and for keeping the column shorter when possible. Plate height can differ for different solutes because they diffuse differently. Typical values range from 0.1 to 1 mm in gas chromatography, about 10 μm in high-performance liquid chromatography, and less than 1 μm in capillary electrophoresis.

Column efficiency can also be described as variance per unit length, since chromatographic bands often have a Gaussian shape.
