Applications of Molecular Taxonomy

Molecular taxonomy in bacterial research uses DNA sequencing and DNA fingerprinting to classify bacteria more precisely. These molecular tools help scientists study bacterial diversity, evolutionary relationships, and ecological roles. They have changed how researchers identify and compare bacteria in both health and environmental studies.

One major use of molecular taxonomy is resolving taxonomic ambiguities, or unclear classification cases. It can separate closely related bacteria that were once placed in the same species or genus. For example, phylogenomic analysis showed that the genus Bacillus was polyphyletic, meaning it did not form one natural evolutionary group. This led to the creation of several new genera that better match the bacteria’s relationships.

Molecular methods are also useful for tracing infections. DNA fingerprinting helped identify strains of Gordonia bronchialis and track how they spread. That information supported better aseptic practices and helped prevent further transmission. These methods give researchers and health workers a clearer way to follow bacterial sources.

These techniques also reveal bacterial diversity in natural habitats without depending on culture-based methods. Scientists have studied soil, aquatic ecosystems, and even extreme environments with high-throughput sequencing and molecular ecological networks. Research on soil bacterial communities in karst systems showed that local conditions shape both microbial diversity and function. This approach reveals microbial compositions and interactions that might otherwise stay hidden.

Molecular taxonomy also helps analyze host-associated microbiota, or bacteria living with a host organism. Studies of lichen-associated bacteria and earthworms have shown specific bacterial partnerships that support host health and ecological functions. In lichen, these bacteria can contribute to nutrient cycling and stress tolerance. Together, these findings show how molecular taxonomy supports microbiology, ecology, and the study of bacterial evolution.
