Crenarchaeota are a major group of Archaea known for living in extreme heat and acidity. They are found in sulfur-rich hot springs, volcanic systems, and submarine hydrothermal vents. Many of these habitats reach temperatures above 100°C. Their survival in these conditions gives clues about life on early Earth.

Crenarchaeota also show a wide range of cell shapes. Some form filaments, while others have irregular discs or lobed cocci, which are round cells with lobes. Scientists place them in three orders: Thermoproteales, Desulfurococcales, and Sulfolobales. Most members are obligate anaerobes, meaning they do not use oxygen, and they gain energy by oxidizing inorganic molecules.

Some Crenarchaeota use different metabolic strategies. Sulfolobus species are aerobic, so they do use oxygen. They grow at about 80°C in acidic hot springs that contain sulfur. These cells oxidize sulfur compounds and produce sulfuric acid. They also use carbon dioxide as their carbon source.

One of the most heat-tolerant examples is Pyrolobus fumarii. This hyperthermophilic archaeon can live at temperatures up to 113°C in hydrothermal vent systems. That temperature is near the upper limit for life in natural settings. Pyrolobus fumarii uses hydrogen as an energy source and survives the high pressure and mineral-rich conditions of vents.

Pyrodictium species are also adapted to hydrothermal vents. They form filament-like networks that help stabilize the cells in hot, high-pressure environments. These networks may also support nutrient exchange and community growth. This helps the organisms stay resilient in extreme habitats.

Crenarchaeota have molecular features that protect them from heat damage. Their proteins are thermostable, which means they stay folded and functional at high temperatures. Many of these proteins have hydrophobic cores and more positively charged amino acids. Heat shock proteins help refold damaged proteins during thermal stress.

Other cell features add more protection. Their ribosomal RNA has unusual structures, and their membranes contain ether-linked lipids that are more stable than many other lipid types. They also have reverse gyrase, an enzyme found only in hyperthermophiles that adds positive supercoils to DNA.
