Their ability to break down complex organic materials, such as starches and cellulose, contributes to nutrient cycling and soil health.<h3>Asexual and Sexual Reproduction</h3>Zygomycota species primarily reproduce asexually through sporangiospores, which develop inside a sac-like sporangium. The sporangium protects the spores from environmental stress until the sporangium ruptures to release the spores for dispersal. Upon landing on a suitable substrate, the spores germinate and form a new mycelial network, allowing for rapid colonization.Under environmental stress, sexual reproduction is initiated. It begins when two compatible hyphae, usually of opposite mating types (+ and -), come into contact and develop specialized structures called gametangia at their tips. These gametangia fuse, leading to plasmogamy, where the cytoplasm of the mating hyphae merges, but the nuclei remain separate. This fusion results in the formation of a zygosporangium, within which karyogamy occurs. This leads to the fusion of nuclei and the development of a thick-walled, diploid zygospore that is highly resistant to harsh environmental conditions. When favorable conditions return, the zygospore undergoes meiosis, producing haploid spores that germinate into new hyphae and continue the life cycle. Zygomycota are a former fungal group made up mostly of terrestrial molds that act as decomposers. Recent phylogenetic studies now place them in two major clades: Mucoromycota and Zoopagomycota. Mucoromycota includes many symbiotic species, while Zoopagomycota is made up mainly of parasitic and pathogenic fungi.

These fungi have coenocytic hyphae, which are filaments without septa, or cross walls. That structure allows cytoplasm and organelles to move through the hyphae in one continuous stream. This helps the fungi move nutrients efficiently and grow quickly. It also supports their role in breaking down starches and cellulose in soil.

Zygomycota usually reproduce asexually by making sporangiospores inside a sporangium, which is a sac-like structure. The sporangium protects the spores until it breaks open and releases them. When a spore lands on a suitable surface, it can germinate and form a new mycelial network. That process allows the fungus to spread rapidly.

Sexual reproduction begins when two compatible hyphae, usually of opposite mating types, + and -, touch each other. They form gametangia at their tips, and these structures fuse in plasmogamy, where the cytoplasm joins but the nuclei stay separate. This leads to a zygosporangium, where karyogamy occurs and the nuclei fuse. A thick-walled, diploid zygospore then forms and can survive harsh conditions. When conditions improve, the zygospore undergoes meiosis and releases haploid spores that grow into new hyphae.

These fungi also have important real-world uses and effects. Rhizopus stolonifer, or black bread mold, grows on carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread and fruits. Rhizopus oligosporus helps in food fermentation, especially in tempeh production. Some species of Mucor and Rhizopus can also cause mucormycosis, an opportunistic infection that can affect the sinuses, lungs, or skin in immunocompromised people. In addition, some Mucoromycota form mycorrhizal associations with plants and help them absorb phosphorus, which supports plant growth.
