firmicutes: bacteria, fermentation, and spores

Firmicutes are a diverse phylum of Gram-positive bacteria with low GC content in their genomes. They include both monoderm and diderm cell envelopes, which points to a complex evolutionary history. Their members show wide variation in shape, metabolism, and ecological role.

Three major orders help show this diversity: Lactobacillales, Clostridiales, and Bacillales. Lactobacillales include lactic acid bacteria, which are fermentative organisms that make lactic acid as their main product. These non-sporulating rods or cocci use fermentation and substrate-level phosphorylation for energy.

Well-known Lactobacillales genera include Lactobacillus and Lactococcus, both commonly linked to dairy fermentation. Streptococcus species may be pathogenic or nonpathogenic and often form chains or tetrads. Enterococcus species are closely associated with humans as part of the normal flora.

Bacillales includes both nonsporulating and endospore-forming genera. Nonsporulating examples include rod-shaped Listeria and cluster-forming coccus Staphylococcus. Endospore-forming genera such as Bacillus and Paenibacillus are known for ecological versatility and industrial uses.

Clostridiales also includes both nonsporulating and endospore-forming members. Acid-tolerant Sarcina is a nonsporulating example, while Clostridium and Sporosarcina form endospores. These organisms thrive in anaerobic conditions and take part in a range of metabolic processes.

Firmicutes also include unusual phototrophic genera such as Heliobacterium and Heliophilum. These anaerobic species carry out anoxygenic photosynthesis with bacteriochlorophyll g. They lack intracytoplasmic photosynthetic membranes and use pyruvate for photoheterotrophic growth.

Another notable group within Firmicutes is the diderm bacteria in the classes Negativicutes and Halanaerobiia. These organisms have outer membranes like Gram-negative bacteria. Their cell structure adds to the evidence for a complex evolutionary path. Firmicutes are important in ecosystems, industry, and human health because of their structural and metabolic adaptations.
