Question 1

What are the three main functions of the nervous system?

Accepted Answer

The nervous system performs three essential functions: sensation, integration, and motor output. Sensory functions detect stimuli from external and internal environments through specialized receptors and transmit this information to the central nervous system. Integrative functions process and interpret sensory information to make decisions. Motor functions transmit signals from the CNS to muscles and glands, producing voluntary or involuntary responses.

Question 2

How do sensory receptors contribute to nervous system function?

Accepted Answer

Sensory receptors detect and process stimuli from the body's internal and external environments. These specialized receptors collect information and transmit it to the central nervous system for processing. For example, mechanoreceptors in fingers sense physical contact with objects like a pen, initiating the sensory phase of coordinated responses such as writing.

Question 3

What role do neurons play in transmitting nerve impulses?

Accepted Answer

Neurons are excitable cells responsible for transmitting nerve impulses, which are electrical signals traveling through the nervous system. These impulses are generated by the movement of ions across the neuron's membrane, creating a difference in electrical charge. When stimulated, neurons generate an action potential that travels down the axon and propagates to the next neuron or effector organ through neurotransmitter release.

Question 4

How do glial cells support nervous system function?

Accepted Answer

Glial cells provide structural and metabolic support to neurons, nourishing them and maintaining the extracellular environment necessary for proper nerve impulse transmission. These supporting cells work alongside neurons to ensure the nervous system functions efficiently, enabling the transmission of electrical signals throughout the body.

Question 5

What happens at synapses between neurons?

Accepted Answer

At synapses, the electrical signal from one neuron is converted to a chemical signal via neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitter molecules cross the synaptic gap and bind to receptors on the next neuron, triggering the generation of a new electrical signal. This chemical transmission allows neurons to communicate and integrate information throughout the nervous system.

Question 6

How does the nervous system coordinate a complex motor task like writing?

Accepted Answer

Writing involves all three nervous system functions working together. Mechanoreceptors sense the pen, the CNS integrates tactile sensations with visual information about the paper and intended letter shapes, and motor signals travel from the brain to hand and arm muscles. This coordinated sensory-integrative-motor sequence enables precise, legible writing through seamless neural communication.

Question 7

What is the resting potential and how does it relate to nerve impulses?

Accepted Answer

The resting potential is the difference in electrical charge across a neuron's membrane when the cell is at rest. When a neuron is stimulated, this resting potential is altered, triggering the generation of an action potential. This change in membrane potential initiates the electrical signal that travels along the neuron's axon, enabling nerve impulse transmission throughout the nervous system.
