Chamber Preference Testing

Chamber preference testing is a behavioral assay that measures an animal’s attraction to, avoidance of, or neutrality toward defined environments or stimuli. In a typical two- or three-chamber apparatus, the subject moves freely between compartments while researchers record time spent in each chamber, entries, and exploratory patterns under controlled conditions. By pairing chambers with social cues, objects, odors, textures, or other experimental conditions, the test quantifies preference and can reveal motivation, recognition, anxiety-related avoidance, or sensory responses. Its flexible design supports studies of learning, social behavior, reward processing, and neurological or psychiatric disease models.

A fundamental aspect of assessing the welfare of animals in captivity is to ask whether the animals have what they want. Here, we present a protocol to determine housing preference in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) with respect to the presence/absence of environmental enrichment and access to flowing of water.

This video describes the taste preference assay, a behavioral method used to measure attraction or avoidance towards colored solutions that taste differently by assessing the fly's abdominal coloration after ingestion of the preferred substance. The featured protocol demonstrates the procedure used to measure flies' preference towards solutions of varying sucrose concentrations.
