Attention Memory Cognition

Attention, memory, and cognition are interconnected mental processes that enable organisms to select information, retain experience, and use knowledge to guide behavior. Attention filters and prioritizes sensory input, while memory encodes, stores, and retrieves information; cognition integrates these operations to support perception, learning, reasoning, and decision-making. In behavioral research, studying their interaction helps explain how environmental demands, prior experience, and goals shape observable actions. These processes also provide a framework for investigating individual differences in learning, performance, and adaptive behavior, as well as changes associated with development, stress, aging, or neurological conditions.

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...

The Real-World What-Where-When memory test is a novel episodic memory test, in which participants need to recall which objects have been hidden in which locations on which of two distinct occasions. It is easy to run and is sensitive to normal cognitive aging.

The Attentional Blink

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In order for recognition of a certain stimulus to take place, visual attention needs to be directed towards said stimulus. To the earliest parts of the visual system, objects are not objects, they are collections of visual features-lines, corners, changes in texture, color, and light. Attention is the resource that is necessary for later processing in order to recognize what a given bundle of features adds up to. This makes...
