Clinical Visual Assessment

Clinical visual assessment is the systematic observation of a person’s visible appearance, behavior, and interactions to support clinical understanding and decision-making. Practitioners assess features such as posture, movement, facial expression, eye contact, grooming, and responsiveness within the person’s social and environmental context, while distinguishing observed behavior from interpretation. In behavioral health, this approach can help identify changes in affect, arousal, psychomotor activity, communication, or social engagement. Used alongside interviews, histories, and standardized measures, clinical visual assessment contributes to screening, behavioral characterization, treatment planning, and monitoring, but visual observations alone do not establish a diagnosis.

Patients with visual deficits after stroke report about different constraints in daily life most likely due to variable compensatory strategies, which are difficult to differentiate in clinical routine. We present a clinical set-up which allows measurement of different compensatory head- and eye-movement-strategies and evaluating their effects on driving performance.

Polar Histogram Visualization of Acute Stress Disorder Scale Scores for Comprehensive Clinical Assessment

2024

This study introduces a novel polar histogram visualization method for analyzing Acute Stress Disorder Scale (ASDS) scores, focusing on elderly ICU caregivers. The technique displayed all 19 ASDS variables simultaneously, revealing distinct stress patterns between healthy controls and caregivers while demonstrating significant improvements post-intervention in hyperarousal and avoidance symptoms.
