Direct Odorant Presentation

Direct odorant presentation is a behavioral method that delivers a defined smell directly to an animal’s olfactory system to measure responses to specific chemical cues. Researchers control factors such as odor identity, concentration, timing, and delivery location, then record outcomes including investigation, approach, avoidance, or changes in activity. By reducing variation in how odors reach the subject, this approach helps link olfactory stimulation to sensory processing, motivation, learning, and decision-making. It is useful for comparing innate and learned odor-guided behaviors and for investigating how environmental cues influence behavior under controlled experimental conditions.

This manuscript describes a protocol to examine the olfactory system of rodents. The olfactory habituation/dishabituation test will allow investigators to determine whether a mouse habituates to a repeatedly presented odor and whether the mouse demonstrates dishabituation when presented a novel odor.

Self-presentation is a fundamental aspect of social interaction, shaping both how others perceive individuals and how they view themselves. This dynamic process influences behaviors in various social settings, often leading people to adjust their appearance, speech, and demeanor to align with their desired identity. While self-presentation can be deliberate or unconscious, it plays a critical role in interpersonal relationships and self-perception.Forms of Self-PresentationSelf-presentation can...

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...

Here we describe how to optimize the acquired video image for an olfactory magnetic-tether (OMT) apparatus. We also describe two sample experimental protocols for studying visuo-olfactory fusion.
