Eating Rate Measurement

Eating Rate Measurement is a behavioral method that quantifies how quickly a person consumes food, providing an objective indicator of eating patterns and meal dynamics. Researchers typically measure food or energy intake over a defined period, often using meal duration, bite or chewing counts, and changes in food weight to calculate consumption speed. In behavioral research, these measures help characterize appetite, satiety, food choice, and eating style, while revealing how meal pace may vary with food texture, portion size, social context, or environmental conditions. Standardized eating-rate protocols support comparisons across individuals and interventions, including studies of dietary behavior, obesity risk, and strategies designed to promote slower eating.

Measuring Reaction Rates

Polarimetry finds application in chemical kinetics to measure the concentration and reaction kinetics of optically active substances during a chemical reaction. Optically active substances have the capability of rotating the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light passing through them—a feature called optical rotation. Optical activity is attributed to the molecular structure of substances. Normal monochromatic light is unpolarized and possesses oscillations of the electrical field in...

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

Fat Preference: A Novel Model of Eating Behavior in Rats

Dietary fat content influences both energy intake and body fat composition in mammals. By examining rats’ preference for high fat food in a series of choice experiments, it is possible to test genetic differences and pharmacological interventions on their preference for high fat food.

Metabolic disorders are among one of the most common diseases in humans. The genetically tractable model organism D. melanogaster can be used to identify novel genes that regulate metabolism. This paper describes a relatively simple method which allows studying the metabolic rate in flies by measuring their CO2 production.
