Elbow Kinesthesia Measurement

Elbow kinesthesia measurement is the quantitative assessment of a person’s ability to sense movement and changes in elbow joint position, an important component of proprioception and motor control. During testing, the elbow is moved actively or passively, and the participant identifies movement direction, detects when motion occurs, or reproduces a target position; responses are then compared with the actual movement to estimate detection thresholds or positional error. In behavioral research, these measures help characterize sensory processing, movement coordination, and the effects of learning, fatigue, injury, or rehabilitation on upper-limb control. They also provide objective outcomes for studying how perception guides voluntary action.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The elbow is a hinged joint that involves the articulation of 3 bones: the humerus, radius, and ulna. It is a much more stable joint than the shoulder, and because of that, the elbow has less range of motion. The elbow and its structures are prone to significant injuries, particularly with repetitive motion. Lateral and medial epicondylitis (also called tennis elbow and golfer's elbow) are two common diagnoses and often...

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.

Survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and critical illness frequently develop long-lasting muscle weakness. Manual muscle testing (MMT) is a standardized clinical examination commonly used to measure strength of peripheral skeletal muscle groups. This video demonstrates MMT using the 6-point Medical Research Council scale.
