Lesion Study

Lesion study is a research method that examines how damage to a specific brain region or neural pathway affects behavior, helping scientists link brain structures with their functions. Researchers create or analyze lesions and compare affected subjects with healthy controls, measuring changes in learning, memory, movement, motivation, or other behaviors to infer the contribution of disrupted circuitry. In behavioral neuroscience and neuropsychology, lesion studies provide evidence for causal relationships between neural systems and behavior. They also support the interpretation of neurological disorders and guide hypotheses for complementary approaches, including brain imaging, electrophysiology, and targeted neural manipulation.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process. This manuscript illustrates an easy to use ex vivo model to investigate fresh carotid or coronary artery plaques. The ex vivo model allows for the investigation of potential substances on the inflammatory milieu in human atherosclerotic lesions and results can be analyzed by various methods.

Laser microirradiation is a useful tool for studies of DNA repair in living cells. A methodological approach for the use of UVA lasers to induce various DNA lesions is shown. We have optimized a method for local microirradiation that maintains the normal cell cycle; thus, irradiated cells proceed through mitosis.

We developed a method to successfully remove, process, section, and stain, for histopathological evaluation, mammary tissue that had originally been fixed on slides as whole mounts. This method may promote the collection and evaluation of mammary gland whole mounts in reproductive and developmental test guideline studies.
