Misinformation Sharing

Misinformation sharing is the spread of false or inaccurate information, whether intentionally or unintentionally, through interpersonal communication, news, and digital platforms. It occurs when people encounter claims, evaluate them using factors such as perceived credibility and emotional appeal, and pass them on through conversation, reposting, or other forms of engagement. In behavioral research, studying misinformation sharing helps explain how attention, social influence, trust, and limited source evaluation shape information transmission. This work informs media literacy, fact-checking, platform design, and public communication strategies intended to reduce harmful beliefs and improve the accuracy of information environments.
