Multi-animal Tracking

Multi-animal tracking is a computer-vision approach for detecting and following multiple animals in video, allowing researchers to measure behavior in naturalistic or laboratory settings. It works by locating animals in successive frames, assigning or maintaining individual identities, and linking their positions into trajectories while accounting for challenges such as overlap, occlusion, and rapid movement. These trajectories provide quantitative measures of locomotion, spacing, group cohesion, social interactions, and behavioral responses to environmental or experimental conditions. In behavioral research, multi-animal tracking supports reproducible analysis of collective behavior, reduces manual scoring, and helps connect individual actions with group dynamics across species and experimental contexts.

We describe an in vivo fluorescence imaging protocol to monitor muscle regeneration by GFP-labeled myoblasts after transplantation into skeletal muscles of both healthy and dystrophic mice. This protocol can be adapted to study muscle regeneration by transplantation of other types of cells and in other muscular conditions as well.

The current study aimed to automate the quantification of motor deficits in rats. The initial evaluation model assesses motor loss resulting from an intracortical microelectrode implantation in the motor cortex. We report on the development and use of a tracking algorithm using easily adaptable, simple, and readily available coding software.

Multiple Object Tracking

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In a staggeringly complex and engaging world, it is crucial to selectively process some stimuli at the expense of others. Experimental psychologists call this ability attention. Specifically, visual attention refers to the ability to selectively process aspects of a visual scene. Many paradigms used to study visual attention involve brief, punctuated, and repeated trials. However, everyday situations often place sustained demands...
