Muscle Temperature Measurement

Muscle temperature measurement is the quantification of heat within or at the surface of skeletal muscle, providing information about metabolic activity, blood flow, and thermoregulatory responses. Sensors such as thermocouples and thermistors detect temperature-dependent voltage or electrical resistance, while infrared methods estimate surface temperature from emitted radiation. These measurements can track thermal changes during movement, exercise, rest, or environmental challenges and can be combined with behavioral observations to relate muscle physiology to activity, fatigue, and performance. Accurate sampling and consistent sensor placement are important because surface readings may not represent deeper tissue.

A thermometer measures body temperature. The common sites for measuring body temperature are the oral cavity, axillary region, temporal artery, and skin surface, such as the forehead, abdomen, and axilla. True core body temperature is assessed in the rectum, tympanic membrane, pulmonary artery, esophagus, and urinary bladder. Oral: When assessing oral temperature, the thermometer tip should be placed under the tongue in the posterior sublingual pocket. It offers accurate readings and can be...

In this video, we describe a surgical procedure to implant a temperature telemetric device in a mouse model to continuously measure its core body temperature.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials in Mouse Forelimb Muscles In Vivo

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique for measuring compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in mice. It outlines the steps for setting up electrodes, stimulating forelimb neurons that innervate muscle fibers, and recording muscle responses. The technique assesses neuronal demyelination and functional neuron loss.

C. elegans Muscle Area Measurements: A Standardized Method to Quantify Striated Muscle Morphology

2023

C. elegans have two types of muscles, single sarcomere and multiple sarcomere, or striated muscles. This video describes the arrangement of the striated body wall muscles, which are responsible for a worm’s locomotion and includes a sample protocol to measure muscle morphology using image analysis software.

Body temperature can be assessed using various devices and measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit. Glass-bulb Thermometer: Glass-bulb thermometers are hollow glass tubes with a bulb tip containing liquid such as ethanol or mercury. Historically, glass bulb mercury thermometers were the standard device to measure body temperature. Today, mercury thermometers are prohibited in many countries due to the hazardous effects of mercury and the risk of exposure if the glass bulb breaks. In general,...
