Mutant Detection

Mutant detection is the identification of genetic variants that alter an organism’s genotype or phenotype, providing a way to connect DNA changes with biological function. In behavioral research, scientists compare mutant and control organisms under standardized conditions, measure traits such as activity, learning, or social interaction, and then use inheritance analysis, genotyping, or DNA sequencing to confirm the causal variant. This approach helps reveal how genes influence neural circuits and behavior, supports the study of neurological and psychiatric disorders, and enables researchers to evaluate genetic models, identify pathways, and guide future investigations of brain function.

Detection of Aggregation-Prone Behavior in Mutant P53 V157F Breast Cancer Cells Using Multipoint Thioflavin T Fluorescence

2025

Hs578T breast cancer cells harboring the p53 V157F mutation exhibit significantly higher Thioflavin T fluorescence compared to MCF7 cells, indicating enhanced protein aggregation. Multipoint fluorescence measurements improve detection accuracy and reliability in identifying β-sheet-rich aggregates, underscoring the importance of aggregation-prone p53 mutations in cancer research and the development of therapeutic strategies.

This video demonstrates how to employ two neural stimulants, aldicarb and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), in complementary ways to study synaptic function in the nematode, C. elegans. This complementary approach may also be used to shed light on evolutionarily conserved mechanisms for modulating neuronal synchrony and has implications for epilepsy and seizures.

(2016)This video demonstrates the expansion of plaque-derived recombinant virus in adherent mammalian cells. The virus carries a fluorescent reporter in place of a virulent gene, enabling infection tracking. Infected cells are harvested for PCR verification of the genetic modification.

The plant cuticle is a waxy outer covering on plants that has a primary role in water conservation but is also an important barrier against the entry of pathogenic microorganisms. In this video, we demonstrate the analysis of plant cuticle mutants identified by forward and reverse genetics approaches.
