Noise-blocking Headphones

Noise-blocking headphones are audio devices that reduce external sound, helping users control the auditory environments that can influence attention, concentration, and behavior. Passive designs use insulating materials and ear-cup seals to limit sound transmission, while active noise cancellation uses microphones to detect ambient noise and produces opposing sound waves that reduce it, especially for steady low-frequency sounds. In behavioral research and everyday settings, these headphones can help examine how environmental noise affects task performance, stress, communication, and sensory focus. Their effects depend on fit, listening conditions, sound type, and how users engage with their surroundings.

2012

We describe the design and assembly of miniaturized headphones suitable for replacing a songbird’s natural auditory feedback with a manipulated acoustic signal. Online sound processing hardware is used to manipulate song output, introduce real-time errors in auditory feedback via the headphones, and drive vocal motor learning.

2013

A methodology for preparing solid-state nanopores in solution for biomolecular translocation experiments is presented. By applying short pulses of high electric fields, the nanopore diameter can be controllably enlarged with subnanometer precision and its electrical noise characteristics significantly improved. This procedure is performed in situ using standard laboratory equipment under experimental conditions.

Block Diagram Reduction

2024

The process of deriving the transfer function of a control system often involves reducing its block diagram to a single block. This simplification can be achieved through a series of strategic operations, including relocating branch points and comparators. These operations preserve the overall function of the system while allowing for easier manipulation and combination of blocks. The first step in this process is the identification and relocation of a branch point. A branch point, where a...
