Obesity Research Model

An obesity research model is an experimental system used to examine how biological, behavioral, and environmental factors contribute to excess body weight and related health outcomes. In behavior-focused research, these models measure processes such as food intake, physical activity, energy balance, reward responses, and reactions to dietary or environmental cues. Researchers use them to test how habits, stress, social conditions, and interventions influence eating behavior and weight regulation. Findings can clarify obesity risk factors, improve the design of behavioral therapies, and support evaluation of prevention strategies before they are applied in clinical or community settings.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...

The goal of this protocol was to develop a murine model of low-level toxicant exposure that does not cause overt liver injury but rather exacerbates pre-existing liver damage. This paradigm better recapitulates human exposure and the subtle changes that occur upon exposure to toxicant concentrations that are considered safe.
