Operative Duration

Operative duration is the elapsed time required to complete a surgical procedure, typically measured from the start of the operation to wound closure or procedural completion. Researchers determine it by recording standardized time points and comparing the interval across procedures, operators, treatment groups, or experimental conditions; longer durations may reflect greater technical complexity or procedural demands. In behavior research, operative duration can serve as an experimental variable or potential confound when surgery alters recovery, activity, stress responses, or subsequent behavioral testing. Tracking it improves study comparability, supports interpretation of postoperative behavior, and helps identify factors associated with procedural efficiency and recovery.

Duration of Unemployment

2025

The duration of unemployment refers to the duration of the period an individual remains unemployed while actively seeking work. In the United States, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), this measure is used to find out how long individuals classified as unemployed have been actively searching for work while still being unemployed. The BLS uses an arithmetic mean to calculate the average duration of unemployment. This method involves summing the number of weeks of unemployment...

Meal Duration as a Measure of Orofacial Nociceptive Responses in Rodents

2014

A lengthening in meal duration represents orofacial nociceptive behavior in rodents similar to the guarding behavior of humans with orofacial pain. Eating is a behavior that requires no training or animal manipulation, requires cortical participation, and is not competing with other experimentally induced behaviors, distinguishing this assay from alternative reflex or operant measurements.

In this protocol we describe a method of operant learning using sensory stimuli as a reinforcer in the mouse. It requires no prior training or food restriction, and it allows the study of motivated behavior without the use of a pharmacological or natural reinforcer such as food.

Noninvasive, High-throughput Determination of Sleep Duration in Rodents

We describe a high-throughput method of measuring sleep by means of activity-based home-cage monitoring. This method offers advantages over traditional EEG-based methods. It is well validated for the determination of total sleep duration and can be a powerful tool to monitor sleep in rodent models of human disease.
