Reactive Balance Assessment

Reactive Balance Assessment is a method for evaluating how effectively a person responds to unexpected disturbances that challenge postural stability. During testing, a controlled perturbation, such as a platform movement or external push, elicits rapid automatic postural responses involving sensory integration, muscle activation, and coordinated steps or other recovery actions. Researchers and clinicians use these assessments to characterize balance behavior, identify delayed or ineffective responses, and study fall risk, motor control, and adaptation. The approach can support rehabilitation planning and provide objective measures for investigating how the nervous system maintains stability during everyday movement.

Electrochemistry is the science involved in the interconversion of electrical and chemical reactions. Such reactions are called reduction-oxidation, or redox reactions. These important reactions are defined by changes in oxidation states for one or more reactant elements and include a subset of reactions involving the transfer of electrons between reactant species. Electrochemistry as a field has evolved to yield sufficient insights on the fundamental principles of redox chemistry and multiple...

Balance and Coordination Testing

Balance and coordination are critical components involved in the control of movement. Many sensory receptors and neural processing units are required to help individuals maintain balance while performing various activities. Deficits in balance and coordination occur in patients suffering from movement disorders or due to aging. Therefore, scientists are trying to understand the pathophysiology behind these conditions. One way to do that is by using rodent models and testing them on behavioral...

A sitting platform has been developed and assembled that passively destabilizes sitting posture in humans. During the user's stabilizing task, an inertial measurement unit records the device's motion, and vibrating elements deliver performance-based feedback to the seat. The portable, versatile device may be used in rehabilitation, assessment, and training paradigms.
