Response Time Analysis

Response time analysis is the measurement and interpretation of the interval between a stimulus and an observable behavioral response, providing a window into how organisms detect, process, and act on information. Researchers present controlled stimuli, record response onset with precise timing, and compare response-time distributions, variability, and accuracy across conditions or groups. In behavioral research, this method helps evaluate attention, perception, decision-making, learning, and motor control while distinguishing faster performance from speed-accuracy trade-offs. Response time analysis also supports computational models of behavior and can reveal subtle changes in cognitive processing that may not be apparent from response accuracy alone.

Noncompartmental Analysis: Mean Residence Time

2025

According to statistical moment theory, mean residence time (MRT) is an important measure in pharmacokinetics. MRT can be defined as the expected mean of a probability density function distribution. It provides valuable insights into drug disposition in the body. After the administration of a drug through intravenous bolus injection, the drug molecules are distributed throughout the body and remain there for varying periods. The MRT represents the average time these drug molecules stay in the...

Conventional computer hardware can not generate visual stimuli with sufficiently high grayscale resolution and measure response times with sufficient accuracy. We describe how to use the VideoSwitcher to produce high-resolution monochromatic displays, and the RTbox to measure response times with high accuracy on conventional computer hardware.

We detail a simple method to produce high-resolution time-lapse movies of Pseudomonas aeruginosa swarms that respond to bacteriophage (phage) and antibiotic stress using a flatbed document scanner. This procedure is a fast and simple method for monitoring swarming dynamics and may be adapted to study the motility and growth of other bacterial species.
