Skilled Motor Task

A skilled motor task is a goal-directed behavior that requires coordinated movement, precise timing, and ongoing control of muscles and joints to achieve a defined outcome. Performance depends on integrating sensory feedback with motor commands, comparing movement results with the intended goal, and adjusting force, posture, or timing through practice. Researchers use skilled motor tasks to study motor learning, sensorimotor integration, movement planning, and behavioral adaptation in humans and animal models. These tasks also help evaluate how brain injury, neurological disease, aging, or rehabilitation affects coordination, providing measurable outcomes for understanding and improving motor function.

We describe a novel virtual-reality based setup which exploits voluntary control of one hand to improve motor-skill performance in the other (non-trained) hand. This is achieved by providing real-time movement-based sensory feedback as if the non-trained hand is moving. This new approach may be used to enhance rehabilitation of patients with unilateral hemiparesis.

Motor Skills Development During Early Childhood

2026

Early childhood is a period of rapid motor development in which children refine gross and fine motor skills. These abilities increase independence and support social interaction, play, and learning.Gross Motor SkillsGross motor skills involve coordinated movements of large muscle groups, including running, jumping, and climbing. By about 2.5 years, most children can jump with both feet. Hopping, which requires greater balance and strength, usually emerges around age 4.Stair climbing also...
